Rostec said on February 5 that its specialists have developed a 30-mm shrapnel shell with a remote-control detonator designed to destroy unmanned aerial vehicles. The ammunition will be presented within a unified Russian display organised by Rosoboronexport at the World Defense Show 2026.

The shell is intended for light artillery systems fitted with the 2A42 automatic cannon, which is deployed across a range of platforms. These include airborne assault vehicles, the BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle, the BMPT tank support fighting vehicle, and the Mi-28NM and Ka-52M helicopters, among other carriers.

“This weapon is designed to maximise the hit probability against small UAVs and loitering munitions,” said Bekhan Ozdoyev, Industrial Director of Rostec’s Armaments, Ammunition and Special Chemicals Cluster. “The sighting system calculates the optimal detonation point based on the target’s flight trajectory, making it possible to hit a UAV with shrapnel,” he added.

“The detonation time is inputted automatically via an optical link,” Ozdoyev said, noting that the approach removes the need for manual programming. “The ammunition will significantly enhance the efficiency of 30-mm cannons installed on various platforms against UAVs.”
