Royal Air Force conducts long-range operations in Indo-Pacific during Operation Hightower

By Defence Industry Europe

The Royal Air Force (RAF) has commenced long-range air operations under Operation Hightower, showcasing its ability to project air power globally from the UK Carrier Strike Group. UK F-35s, supported by the RAF’s Voyager aircraft, are operating at extended range as part of this strategic deployment.

The RAF is collaborating closely with the Republic of Korea and Japan to enhance defence ties and improve interoperability with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) and the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF). These joint activities reflect the UK’s continued commitment to regional security in the Indo-Pacific.

The RAF’s Voyager, part of the Air Mobility Force, is central to the operation, delivering both air-to-air refuelling and airlift capabilities. This enables RAF aircraft to operate far from the UK or the Carrier Strike Group with sustained tempo and flexibility.

Operation Hightower follows RAF participation in Exercise Talisman Sabre, where UK F-35s and a Voyager operated from Darwin, Australia, demonstrating integrated air operations with regional partners. After the exercise, RAF assets forward deployed to begin Operation Hightower in advance of the UK Carrier Strike Group.

During the operation, joint training with JASDF and ROKAF will focus on tactical integration and shared mission planning. These coordinated efforts are intended to support strategic objectives and deepen military cooperation across the region.

“Operation Hightower demonstrates our ability to operate globally at range, delivering air power with allies and partners,” said Air Vice-Marshal Phil Robinson, Air Officer Commanding 11 Group. “This operation builds on our work in Talisman Sabre and shows our commitment to the Indo-Pacific.”

This deployment forms part of Operation Highmast, encompassing multiple RAF exercises and operations throughout the Indo-Pacific. Operation Hightower underlines the RAF’s reach, resilience, and commitment to strategic partnerships in the region.
