Royal Air Force personnel have taken over responsibility for NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing mission in Romania following a handover ceremony at the 86th Air Base in Borcea. The transfer of duties took place on 31 March 2026 as part of ongoing Alliance operations.

The deployment marks the start of the United Kingdom’s four-month contribution to Operation Biloxi 2026. The mission supports NATO’s Eastern Sentry vigilance activity along the Alliance’s eastern flank.

The RAF detachment from 121 Expeditionary Air Wing replaces a German Eurofighter contingent. Officials said the transition reflects the high level of interoperability between Allied air forces.

RAF Typhoon aircraft from 3 (Fighter) Squadron will now conduct Quick Reaction Alert duties. The aircraft will also participate in joint training activities with Romanian forces to strengthen operational coordination.

The handover ceremony was hosted by the Romanian Air Force and underscored continued cooperation among NATO members. Officials highlighted the importance of joint operations in maintaining collective defence.

The United Kingdom has supported NATO Air Policing missions in Romania since 2014. The latest deployment continues that long-standing contribution to regional security.

Officials said the mission ensures a credible and capable NATO presence in a region of heightened vigilance. It also reinforces the Alliance’s commitment to protecting its eastern borders.

The RAF said the deployment demonstrates its readiness and ability to integrate with partner air forces. The operation forms part of broader NATO efforts to deter threats and maintain stability in the region.
