Persistent Systems has announced the full deployment of over 2,000 MPU5 radio systems to the UK Royal Marines, supporting the ongoing transformation of the UK Commando Force (UKCF). The rollout marks a key milestone in the Royal Marines’ shift towards a faster, more autonomous and technology-driven expeditionary force.

The MPU5 radios operate on Persistent’s Wave Relay® mobile ad hoc network (MANET), creating a scalable communications infrastructure that connects personnel, sensors, vehicles, unmanned systems and command centres. This connectivity is designed to improve operational effectiveness in contested electronic warfare environments.

The adoption of commercial, non-ITAR defence technology signals the Royal Marines’ move away from legacy, government-only systems. This decision increases interoperability with allied forces and reinforces the UK’s position in multinational military cooperation.

“True interoperability is about more than just working with allies. It’s about uniting every Marine, every vehicle, and every sensor into a single resilient network,” said Eve Shapiro, Senior Director of Sales and Business Development at Persistent. “With the Wave Relay MANET, the Royal Marines can execute complex, distributed operations while maintaining constant connectivity and situational awareness.”

The UKCF initiative represents the most significant modernisation of the Royal Marines since the Second World War, aiming to develop a globally deployable littoral force. The programme focuses on small, agile teams supported by unmanned, AI-enabled systems and advanced C4ISR networks.
