Rapid changes in warfare, highlighted by the ongoing war in Ukraine, underline the growing importance of advanced technologies such as drones and counter-drone systems. These developments demand a smarter approach to combat and the ability to stay ahead of the enemy.
A key focus of Bastion Lion was the integration of various military capabilities, including fire support, air defence, medical care, logistics, and engineering units. The presence of armoured howitzers at the German training site in Guz Altmark reinforced the realism of the exercise.
The exercise also served as a practical testing ground for new operational methods. Soldiers trained in drone warfare and evaluated improvements in command structures and logistical processes.
Military readiness was not the only objective; the mindset of the troops played a central role in the training. The exercise emphasised teamwork, resilience, and adapting to the evolving nature of modern combat.
“Modern warfare requires a different way of thinking and acting,” said Brigadier General Gert-Jan Kooij of the 13th Light Brigade. “It’s about fighting to win, working as a team, and giving everyone space to fulfil their role. We are ready, but you are never truly finished – we must always strive to get even better.”
