Calio said the cross-company development had progressed from concept to an upcoming flight test in less than 12 months. He presented the project as an example of RTX using technologies from across its businesses to accelerate the development of new defense capabilities.
The initiative brings together Raytheon, which develops StormBreaker, and Pratt & Whitney, RTX’s propulsion business. The arrangement reflects the company’s broader effort to use its scale and internal engineering resources to shorten development timelines.
“At Raytheon, the team is utilizing a modified TJ-150 engine from Pratt to develop a new longer-range variant of our precision-guided air-launched StormBreaker effector,” Calio said. “This cross-company initiative has moved from concept to an upcoming flight test in less than 12 months to support delivering this new capability.”
RTX did not disclose the expected range of the new variant or provide a date and location for the planned flight test. Calio also gave no details on prospective customers, potential production volumes or when the weapon could become available for operational use.
The development was included in Calio’s update on RTX’s strategic priorities, which placed an emphasis on execution, investment and innovation. He said the company was making focused investments intended to address long-term global demand more quickly while expanding capacity across its businesses.
The longer-range StormBreaker project is one of several technology initiatives RTX highlighted during the quarter. Calio’s remarks, however, were limited to the modified engine, the accelerated development timeline and the approaching flight-test phase.
