Saab and ICEYE partner to enhance military command with space-based radar data

By Defence Industry Europe

ICEYE, the global leader in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite operations for Earth Observation, persistent monitoring, and natural catastrophe solutions, has today announced signing the contract for the Greek National Satellite Space Project Axis 1.2 (radar program) for the Greek Space Agency and Greek Ministry of Digital Governance, together with the European Space Agency.

Swedish defence company Saab has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ICEYE, a leader in Synthetic-Aperture Radar (SAR) technology, to integrate advanced space-based radar data into military command and control systems. The partnership aims to enhance situational awareness, improve tactical decision-making, and provide critical intelligence in complex operational environments.

Space-based sensors play an increasingly vital role in modern defence, offering reliable information even in challenging conditions such as cloud cover and darkness. By incorporating ICEYE’s SAR technology into Saab’s systems, military forces will gain access to real-time, high-resolution imagery for surveillance and reconnaissance.

According to Carl-Johan Bergholm, Senior Vice President and Head of Saab’s Surveillance division, the integration of ICEYE’s radar data will support faster and more informed decision-making. The collaboration is expected to enhance capabilities for long-range targeting and battlefield awareness, ensuring a strategic advantage for military operators.

The initial focus of the MoU is to explore and demonstrate how SAR data can support multi-domain operations. Beyond military applications, the partnership also seeks to improve space situational awareness and critical infrastructure protection, benefiting both civilian and military authorities in times of peace, crisis, and conflict.
