Swedish defence company Saab has received a contract worth approximately USD 46 million from the U.S. Army for the delivery of Giraffe 1X radars. The order, booked in the third quarter of 2025, will support U.S. security co-operation partners.

Deliveries of the Giraffe 1X systems are scheduled to begin in 2026. The contract highlights the rising demand for Saab’s radar systems to enhance air defence and Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) capabilities globally.

“Saab’s Giraffe 1X radars bring the U.S. Army a combat-proven capability that can be rapidly deployed to meet the growing spectrum of global threats, including unmanned aerial systems,” said Erik Smith, head of Saab in the U.S. “What sets Giraffe 1X apart is its ability to combine advanced counter-UAS performance, at extended ranges, within a compact, mobile design that commanders can trust in any environment.”

Smith added, “With continuous, real-time air surveillance, Giraffe 1X equips the U.S. and its security co-operation partners with a decisive operational advantage, ensuring they can stay ahead of emerging challenges.” The Giraffe 1X is a compact, lightweight 3D radar that can be deployed as a mobile, fixed, or ship-based system.

With its multi-mission capability—ranging from force protection and ground-based air defence to sea surface surveillance—the Giraffe 1X is the first radar of its type. Saab’s solution offers commanders enhanced operational flexibility across varied mission environments.
