The system functions as an add-on within live training environments, integrating seamlessly with Saab’s exercise control software, EXCON. Customisable with sensors and simulated weapons, the UAV trainer features a laser target system that allows it to virtually engage participants and simulate being neutralised by ground forces, offering a comprehensive evaluation of soldier performance.
“We see the increased use of military UAVs on the battlefield. The need for a solution that makes soldiers ready to detect, engage, and hide from these is crucial,” said Joakim Alhbin, head of Saab’s business unit Training and Simulation. He added that the capability has generated significant interest from existing live training customers, with the UK Armed Forces being the first to adopt the instrumented UAV service for live training scenarios.
Built on a commercial UAV platform, Saab’s solution is tailored to replicate aerial threats from opposing forces. It is capable of dropping “virtual munitions,” recording troop activities on video, and providing valuable data for feedback and training improvement, thereby enhancing counter-UAV tactics and survivability.
Initially offered as a service, Saab’s UAV trainer includes full support for drone operation during training exercises. Following a strong reception, the company has fulfilled multiple customer trials and recently secured an order to deliver prototype UAV live training systems to an undisclosed customer.
