Safran Aero Boosters and BMT Aerospace to produce F-35 engine parts under new Belgian agreement

By Defence Industry Europe

Patria and Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) that covers the contractual framework for Pratt & Whitney F135 engine production and sustainment projects in Finland by Patria.

Safran Aero Boosters and BMT Aerospace will manufacture key components of Pratt & Whitney’s F135 engine, which powers the F-35 Lightning II, under a new agreement signed as part of Belgium’s acquisition of the fighter jets. The agreement was concluded at Base aérienne Jean Offenberg in Florennes during a ceremony marking the arrival of Belgium’s first F-35 aircraft, attended by Deputy Prime Minister David Clarinval and Minister of Defence Theo Francken.

The deal strengthens Belgian industrial participation in the F-35 programme and aims to deliver significant economic returns to the country. It enables Safran Aero Boosters to establish production capacity for F135 engine components and formalises its partnership with BMT Aerospace to implement an innovative manufacturing concept.

Safran Aero Boosters, based in Wallonia, and BMT Aerospace, based in Flanders, have worked together for several years on a Research and Technology project focused on developing advanced production capabilities for F135 components. This long-term cooperation between the two regions will now be reinforced through the strategic industrial project with Pratt & Whitney.

The initiative reflects the Belgian government’s focus on promoting economic development and job creation in the defence sector. It builds on previous efforts and represents an additional economic return under the wider framework of the F-35 programme, supported jointly by regional and federal authorities.

François Lepot, CEO of Safran Aero Boosters, stated: “I would like to sincerely thank all the stakeholders that helped bring about these major benefits for the Belgian industrial sector. This agreement illustrates the government’s strong political commitment to Belgium’s sovereignty and job creation in the country. It means the Belgian industrial sector will play a key, strategic role in the supply chain of this iconic aircraft program.”

Benoit Reynders, CEO of BMT Aerospace, said: “By joining forces with Safran Aero Boosters and Pratt & Whitney, we are demonstrating how innovation and cooperation between regions can deliver world-class capabilities. For BMT Aerospace, this project not only strengthens our long-standing expertise in high-precision parts, but also secures long-term industrial activity and skilled jobs in Flanders.”

Deputy Prime Minister David Clarinval added: “The F-35 program is more than a military acquisition; it is a strategic investment in Belgium’s security, sovereignty, and industrial strength. It reinforces our commitment to transatlantic cooperation, our dedication to developing Belgium’s technological and defense industrial base, and our belief in the power of innovation. The budgetary effort results in societal returns for our companies; every euro invested acts as a lever for our industry, employment, and our economy. This new partnership between Pratt & Whitney, Safran Aero Boosters, and BMT Aerospace supports innovation, strengthens the competitiveness of our companies, and demonstrates the excellent cooperation with our American ally.”

Defence Minister Theo Francken stated: “Today, we are demonstrating that the economic return of the F-35 program extends beyond Lockheed Martin. With the partnership between Pratt & Whitney, Safran and BMT, we are ensuring Belgian innovation in an essential component: the F-35’s engine.”
