The Sako ARG is based on the AR-15 platform, incorporating advanced engineering to meet the demands of modern combat. It offers two operating systems: a short-stroke gas piston system for extreme conditions and a direct impingement system for a lighter design with refined accuracy.
Three models have been introduced in the line-up: the Sako ARG 40 GP and DI, both chambered in 5.56×45 NATO, and the Sako ARG 50 GP, a semi-automatic sniper rifle in 7.62×51. “The SAKO ARG is more than a rifle, it’s a mission-ready system designed to protect what matters most,” said Juuso Austin, Vice President – Defence & Law Enforcement Business Unit at Sako. “It’s built for those who operate where others hesitate.”
The ARG is fully ambidextrous with safety selectors, magazine releases and bolt catch mechanisms, supporting fast handling under pressure. Each rifle is fitted with a match-grade trigger unit and a cold-hammer forged, hard-chrome lined barrel for long-term durability and accuracy.
Modularity is a key feature, with configurable stocks and forends and compatibility with Picatinny, M-LOK and AR-standard components. “We designed the ARG to give clients the freedom to choose the right configuration for their needs,” said Sami Vaajamo, Senior Product Group Manager at Sako. “Whether you’re in a frozen tundra or a dense urban environment, the ARG adapts without compromise.”
The rifles have been tested in Arctic, muddy and sandy conditions to ensure readiness in the harshest environments. Miikka Tamminen, Vice President – Research & Development at Sako, said: “The development of the SAKO ARG platform began over a decade ago with a clear mission: to create a modern, modular rifle system capable of replacing legacy assault rifles across military and law enforcement forces.”
“From day one, we prioritized real-world performance. That meant working hand-in-hand with professional users from defence organizations, incorporating their feedback into every design iteration—from ergonomics and modularity to reliability and maintainability,” Tamminen added. “The ARG has been tested far beyond standard requirements. In addition to rigorous NATO D14 environmental and durability testing, we push our rifles to failure in-house to understand their true limits. These insights are not just data—they’re design tools that help us build a stronger, more resilient system.”
Beyond rifles, Sako is offering an ecosystem of compatible accessories such as optics, thermal and night vision systems, laser designators and tactical cases, provided through global partners. Lifecycle support will include operator and armorer training, spare parts and modernisation services to ensure long-term operational readiness.
Founded in 1921, Sako has a long history in Finland’s defence sector and has supplied dozens of armed forces worldwide. Since joining Beretta Holding Group in 2000, the company has expanded its global reach while continuing to produce military, sporting and hunting rifles alongside ammunition.
