Sierra Space launches defence arm and expands production to support national security

By Defence Industry Europe

Sierra Space, a major player in commercial space and emerging defence technology, has announced the creation of a new division, Sierra Space Defense, dedicated to national security missions as a prime contractor. Alongside this, the company revealed plans for a new 60,000-square-foot production facility named “Victory Works,” expanding its total infrastructure to over one million square feet across seven US states.

The establishment of Sierra Space Defense and the infrastructure growth are in direct response to increasing threats in the space domain from near-peer adversaries. The company is shifting its commercial capabilities to focus on strengthening the US defence industrial base through advanced satellite and spacecraft systems.

Since 2023, Sierra Space has secured $1.5 billion in national security and defence contracts, including production of 30 satellites. This includes 18 missile warning and defence satellites awarded by the Space Development Agency (SDA) in January 2024 under a $740 million prime contract for the SDA’s Tranche 2 Tracking Layer.

In September 2024, the US Space Force awarded Sierra Space a “Quick Start” Resilient GPS (R-GPS) agreement. The company also holds over 20 active contracts in its spacecraft systems business, covering solar arrays and other vital components.

“Sierra Space is committed to applying our advanced technologies and capabilities to deliver on the critical mission of protecting U.S. interests in space,” said a company spokesperson. “The launch of Sierra Space Defense and the expansion of our infrastructure underscores our sense of urgency in supporting the nation’s evolving security needs.”
