The M7 will replace the M4 carbine, while the M250 will take over from the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon. Both systems offer increased range and lethality compared to their predecessors, providing enhanced battlefield advantage.
This classification ensures the seamless integration of the M7 and M250 into the Army’s existing logistics, training, and operational systems. It also marks the transition of these weapons from development to full adoption, indicating their readiness for widespread fielding.
Steve Rose, Executive Vice President of SIG SAUER’s Defense Strategies Group, stated: “This approval underscores the U.S. Army’s commitment to equipping our soldiers with next generation lethality to maintain tactical superiority and enhance mission success.” He added, “The M7 and M250 represent a transformative leap in combat capability.”
The NGSW Programme began in 2017 with the aim of overhauling small arms capability within the Army. Following a 27-month prototype and testing phase, SIG SAUER’s XM7 and XM250 were selected in April 2022.
