Sirius Compact: a passive electronic warfare sensor from Saab

By Defence Industry Europe

Swedish defence company Saab is set to exhibit at Eurosatory 2024, held at the Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre in Paris from June 17 to 21. Among the various innovations on display, Saab will highlight its Sirius Compact passive electronic warfare (EW) sensor system, a product that promises to revolutionize situational awareness in tactical operations.

The Sirius Compact is a modular and scalable passive EW sensor, designed to enhance situational awareness by silently detecting, classifying, and prioritizing radar and datalink emissions. This capability allows military forces to gain a strategic advantage by broadening their sensing horizon and improving early warning systems, all while remaining undetected.

One of the standout features of the Sirius Compact is its low Size, Weight, and Power (SWAP) profile. This makes it ideal for rapid deployment across various platforms, including drones, vehicles, vessels, masts, or even as a man-portable unit. Its versatility means it can be integrated seamlessly into a wide range of electronic warfare operations, enhancing flexibility and operational efficiency.

The Sirius Compact can function as a standalone unit or as part of a network with multiple sensors. When networked, for instance, through a swarm of drones, the system can triangulate signals to determine their exact position, significantly improving target accuracy and early warning capabilities. This is particularly beneficial for Ground Based Air Defence (GBAD) operations, where precise target information is crucial.

Additionally, the Sirius Compact is designed to operate autonomously, compiling signal information to provide comprehensive situational awareness. Importantly, it does this without storing any sensitive data within the sensor itself, thereby ensuring security and data integrity.

Saab will host a press briefing during Eurosatory to discuss the latest product and business developments related to the Sirius Compact. This briefing will delve into the sensor’s modularity, scalability, and its pivotal role in modernizing electronic warfare capabilities. Attendees will gain insights into how the Sirius Compact meets surveillance challenges across all levels of tactical operations.
