Swedish defence company Saab has secured a SEK 540 million (EUR 49.4 million) contract from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to extend the service life of the Spanish Army’s Arthur artillery radar systems. The upgrade will enhance Spain’s artillery locating capabilities using modern technology while maintaining cost efficiency.

The improvements will support high operational mobility and enable precise counter-battery operations, allowing more targets to be detected at longer ranges with a lower electronic signature. Arthur is a digitalised radar system that helps protect troops and civilians by detecting incoming fire and supporting missions such as fire control and counter-battery fire.

“We are pleased to continue to strengthen Spain’s artillery locating capability, which is critical in warning of incoming fire as well as enabling quick counter-battery fire. The order is the first of our radar systems to go via NATO’s purchasing organisation which is an important step for us,” says Carl-Johan Bergholm, head of Saab’s business area Surveillance.
