Spain's Ministry of Defence (MINISDEF) has selected U.S. drone manufacturer Skydio to supply its advanced autonomous drones for military operations. In partnership with Spanish defence distributor Paukner Group, Skydio will provide the Spanish Armed Forces with Skydio X10D drones under an initial contract valued at up to EUR 18 million.

The Skydio X10D is a small uncrewed aerial system (sUAS) designed for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The drone features advanced autonomy, onboard artificial intelligence, and powerful sensors, making it well-suited for modern battlefield operations.

Adam Bry, CEO and co-founder of Skydio, highlighted the importance of autonomous drones in military strategy. He stated that the X10D is built for resilience in contested environments and will support Spain’s Armed Forces in human-machine teaming missions.

Skydio has established itself as a leading drone provider for military applications, having supplied its technology to every branch of the U.S. Department of Defense and armed forces in 25 allied nations. The X10D model, which began shipping in 2024, is known for its modular and open architecture, allowing flexibility for evolving military needs.

The drones will play a key role in Spanish Army operations, enhancing capabilities in force protection, reconnaissance, facility security, and target acquisition. Additional applications include crowd control and command post support, strengthening Spain’s defence infrastructure.

Beyond military use, Skydio drones also serve over 2,500 commercial and public organisations worldwide. With more than 45,000 units shipped, the company has demonstrated expertise in delivering scalable, high-performance drone solutions.

The acquisition marks a strategic investment in advanced drone technology, ensuring Spain remains at the forefront of autonomous defence capabilities. This contract reinforces the growing reliance on small autonomous drones for modern security and military operations.
