Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and Saab have signed an updated contract for the two Blekinge-class (A26) submarines, setting new delivery dates for 2031 and 2033. The revised contract brings the total value to approximately SEK 25 billion (about EUR 2.17 billion) and includes additional measures to strengthen long-term supply security in the submarine sector.

Sweden and Poland have taken a further step in their defence cooperation after signing a memorandum of understanding on submarines. The document was signed by Swedish Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and sets the framework for continued negotiations.

“Today we took an important step towards a Swedish-Polish submarine deal. Together, Sweden and Poland have the tools to substantially bolster security in the Baltic Sea region, and we value our close cooperation with Poland,” says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson. The memorandum follows Poland’s announcement on 26 November that it had chosen Sweden as its partner in the submarine programme.

The agreement builds on Poland’s decision to procure three submarines in what is expected to become one of Sweden’s largest-ever naval export deals. Once a contract is concluded, the cooperation is expected to deepen defence ties and enhance joint responsibility for security in the Baltic Sea.

Sweden and Poland have a long history of cooperation in the region and have recently intensified their partnership on security and defence. The submarine project is intended to further strengthen military, political and industrial links between the two countries.
