The agreement formalises efforts by the two defence ministries and establishes conditions for implementing joint projects in the defence industry. It also sets out the intention to continue exchanging technologies and expertise in weapons and military equipment production to strengthen the resilience and self-sufficiency of both countries’ defence industries.
“Sweden is eager to intensify its defence industrial cooperation with Ukraine. With this Letter of intent, we aim to strengthen both Swedish and Ukrainian rearmament. By combining a Swedish industrial base, Ukrainian innovation, and Ukrainian battlefield experience, we can build a stronger joint defence industry,” says Minister of Defence Pål Jonson.
During the meeting in Kyiv, Denys Shmyhal expressed gratitude for Sweden’s support. He thanked the Swedish people and leadership for their “steadfast support for Ukraine in all areas during the repulsion of Russian aggression,” including Sweden’s participation in the PURL initiative and its joint allocation of USD 486 million with Norway and Denmark.
The Ukrainian side briefed the Swedish delegation on the battlefield situation and the key needs of Ukraine’s Defence Forces. The talks also addressed prospects for cooperation in military aviation, including pilot training and joint projects between Swedish and Ukrainian companies.
“I thanked the Swedish Government in particular for the transfer of ASC 890 airborne early warning and control aircraft,” said Ukraine’s Minister of Defence. Delegations further discussed working on military innovations to accelerate their practical application, expanding joint production, and strengthening cooperation in space technologies.
In addition to forming part of Sweden’s military support to Ukraine, the cooperation is expected to benefit Swedish industry and defence capability. Both sides see the agreement as a step towards more resilient and capable defence sectors.
