Sweden joins NATO coalition for enhanced Patriot GEM-T missile procurement

By Defence Industry Europe

The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has announced that Sweden has joined a coalition of nations, including Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Spain, to procure up to 1,000 Patriot Guidance Enhanced Missiles (GEM-T). This collaborative effort aims to bolster air defence capabilities across Europe, addressing threats from cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and enemy aircraft.

With Sweden’s inclusion, the NSPA will fully execute a contract awarded in January 2024 to COMLOG, a joint venture between Raytheon, an RTX business, and MBDA. The contract will expand European production capacity for GEM-T missiles, strengthening the industrial base and ensuring the replenishment of Patriot missile inventories.

The agreement encompasses the qualification of updated missile components, the inclusion of new suppliers, and the provision of test equipment and spare parts for future sustainment. These measures will not only support current coalition members but also benefit other Patriot user nations by offering favourable terms and scalable advantages.

GEM-T missiles are a critical component of the combat-proven Patriot air defence system, which is used by eight European nations. The multinational procurement facilitated by NSPA enables economies of scale and accelerates production to meet increasing demand for this advanced air defence technology.

“We welcome Sweden to this coalition of nations for the procurement of these complex yet essential capabilities. This contract will deliver effective and cost-efficient air defence systems to each nation while reinforcing defence industrial capacities in Europe,” stated Ms Stacy A. Cummings, NSPA General Manager. She highlighted the significance of close Euro-Atlantic cooperation in achieving these goals.

Sweden’s Minister for Defence, Mr Pål Jonson, emphasised the importance of collaboration: “We defend ourselves together, and with this procurement, we strengthen our defences together. With 1,000 Patriot missiles ordered, we in this coalition can bring down the cost per missile and expand the European defence industrial base.”

Mr Thomas Gottschild, Managing Director of MBDA Germany, pointed out the benefits of this initiative, noting, “The new production capacity for Patriot GEM-T missiles in Germany enhances security of supply and will contribute to the replenishment of Patriot air defence missile inventories.”

Raytheon’s President of Land & Air Defence Systems, Mr Thomas Laliberty, echoed these sentiments, stating, “This bundled procurement strengthens cooperation among European Patriot allies, increases NATO’s air defence missile inventory, and sustains the operational readiness of Patriot systems across Europe.”

The NSPA, headquartered in Luxembourg, plays a central role in facilitating multinational acquisition and sustainment for NATO missions. COMLOG, a joint venture established in 1987, specialises in the logistical support and maintenance of Patriot missiles, operating a dedicated facility in Schrobenhausen, Germany.
