The Swedish Government has instructed the Armed Forces to offer NATO the opportunity to open a logistics headquarters in Sweden. The Armed Forces has also been tasked with preparing and establishing the headquarters so it can be operable by the end of 2027.

Each NATO Area of Operations includes a Joint Logistics Support Group Headquarters (JLSG HQ), which coordinates the maintenance and transport of military units. As Sweden and other Nordic countries join NATO’s Northwest Area of Operations, the need for such a headquarters in the region has arisen.

The new headquarters will be established in Enköping and will initially comprise around 70 personnel during peacetime. In a heightened state of alert and in wartime, this number could expand to 160.

The headquarters will be part of NATO’s command structure, with staffing coordinated centrally by NATO. All Allies will have the opportunity to second staff officers to the new base.

“NATO presence in Sweden strengthens our security and deterrence. The logistics centre assists the defence of NATO’s northern flank,” says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.

The Swedish Armed Forces will provide continuous updates to the Government Offices (Ministry of Defence) on the progress of establishing the headquarters.
