American shipbuilder Davie Defense has been awarded a contract by the United States Coast Guard to build five Arctic Security Cutters, a new class of polar icebreaker aimed at increasing U.S. presence in the Arctic. The award forms part of a program of up to 11 vessels authorized under the Presidential Memorandum “Construction of Arctic Security Cutters,” with two to be built in Finland at Helsinki Shipyard and three to be constructed in Texas.
