The Bundeskartellamt has given the green light to the formation of a joint venture between German defence and technology group Rheinmetall AG and Italian aerospace and defence company Leonardo S.p.A.

Italy is considering a significant investment in its defence capabilities by potentially purchasing hundreds of tanks from the German defence group Rheinmetall. Although not yet confirmed and based on unofficial information, this deal, if finalized, would be the company's largest ever, valued at approximately 20 billion euros ($21.50 billion), according to the Handelsblatt business daily, which cited industry sources.

Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) has signed a preliminary agreement with Leonardo, marking a strategic step in the European defence sector.

Leonardo and Rheinmetall have decided to establish a joint venture aiming at forming a new European nucleus for the development and production of military combat vehicles in Europe. The companies had already signed a corresponding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Rome at the beginning of July 2024.
