Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division has conducted a live experiment firing high-speed projectiles into timed explosions to observe how shockwaves affect rounds in flight. Over two days, engineers used a M110 Howitzer with a 155 mm barrel to launch projectiles travelling nearly four times the speed of sound toward controlled blasts of 30 to 100 pounds of dynamite.
