The European Commission has published the funding decisions of the 2023 research and development projects under the European Defence Fund (EDF). For the first time, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland was given the responsibility of coordinating two of the projects. VTT is also involved as a partner in the three other projects. The overall programme has received almost EUR 68 million in funding from the EU.

Research consortium led by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Lockheed Martin has finalised a frame agreement for indirect industrial cooperation. Other members of the consortium are defence and technology company Patria, Harp Technologies, a Finnish SME active in space, defence, and remote sensing technologies, and two leading, innovative Finnish universities: Aalto University and the University of Tampere.

On 25 October 2023, in the margins of the NATO-Industry Forum in Stockholm, Sweden, the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCI Agency) signed a Not-For-Profit Framework agreement with Finland's VTT Technical Research Centre. This marks the first cooperation of this kind with a Finnish partner organization after only half a year since Finland joined NATO.

The European Commission has announced the results of the 2022 research and development projects under the European Defence Fund (EDF). VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is involved in two projects that received a total of EUR 58 million from the EU. They will help to develop the EU’s defence capabilities in critical areas in the pan-European air defence and in space-based military intelligence. The projects are led by Airbus Defence and Space.
