Teledyne FLIR Defense secures USD 74 million contract to enhance U.S. Coast Guard surveillance systems

By Defence Industry Europe

Teledyne FLIR Defense, a subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies, has been awarded a five-year Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract worth up to $74.2 million. The contract involves providing the United States Coast Guard (USCG) with advanced imaging surveillance systems to support a range of critical maritime operations.

Under the agreement, Teledyne FLIR Defense will supply more than 125 Electro-Optic Sensor System-Modernized (ESS-M) units. These systems are specifically designed for the USCG’s rotary-wing aircraft, including the MH-60 and MH-65 models, and feature cutting-edge full-HD sensor suites, improved user interfaces, and enhanced processing capabilities.

The ESS-M technology enables operators to capture high-definition imagery in daylight, low light, and infrared conditions. It is intended to enhance USCG missions such as search and rescue, living marine resources monitoring, and law enforcement, as well as bolster coastal security and interdiction efforts against drugs and illegal migration.

This modernisation effort will also strengthen the Coast Guard’s capacity to protect ports, waterways, and other critical infrastructure. The upgraded systems are designed with scalability in mind, ensuring they can accommodate future technological advancements.

Teledyne FLIR Defense has a longstanding relationship with the USCG, having supported legacy ESS systems for medium- and short-range recovery aircraft since 2005. The latest contract builds on this foundation, cementing the company’s role as a trusted partner in maritime surveillance.

Dr. JihFen Lei, President of Teledyne FLIR Defense, emphasised the significance of the updates. “The significant updates through ESS-M will enable the U.S. Coast Guard to stay on technology’s cutting edge while conducting its wide range of key maritime operations,” she said. “We’re proud to extend our history of support and look forward to building our relationship across all mission areas.”
