SCANTER Sphera features seamless horizontal and vertical coverage, delivering a compact and durable radar sensor solution. According to Terma, its design allows for easy redeployment, making it suitable for military bases, border security, and the protection of high-value sites, including energy facilities and complex environments.
Thomas Blom, Senior Vice President of Surveillance & Mission Systems at Terma, emphasised the system’s importance: “SCANTER Sphera represents a strategic leap in our ability to detect and respond to drone threats. Our customers need faster classification, wider coverage, and dependable performance in any environment. SCANTER Sphera is built for precisely that—giving operators the time and insight to make the right decisions when seconds count.”
SCANTER Sphera builds on Terma’s established experience in small target detection, incorporating advancements from the SCANTER 5000 and 6000 series. These earlier models are known for detecting fast, low-RCS targets over both land and water. SCANTER Sphera introduces 3D coverage, AI-driven classification, and enhanced mobility, addressing modern drone threats with increased speed and precision.
The system is specifically designed to meet the growing need for critical infrastructure protection, as threats become more technologically advanced. SCANTER Sphera offers a robust and scalable solution, suitable for safeguarding key assets such as energy installations, transportation hubs, and government facilities. Terma highlights its adaptability and long-range performance, making it particularly suitable for high-risk environments.
A key feature of SCANTER Sphera is its advanced AI engine, which classifies threats based on movement rather than just size or shape. By analysing micro-Doppler signatures and target kinematics, the system can reliably differentiate between drones and other objects, even in cluttered environments. This capability is intended to enable faster and more accurate threat recognition, providing operators with more time to respond.
The system offers 360° 3D detection, covering terrain, airspace, and water surfaces such as lakes and shorelines. Its software-defined architecture supports remote updates, allowing new AI models and radar functions to be integrated with minimal disruption. This ensures that SCANTER Sphera can adapt to evolving threats and maintain operational readiness.
SCANTER Sphera is designed for long-term deployment in challenging conditions, offering reliable, weather-resistant performance with low maintenance requirements. Despite its robust build, it remains compact enough for quick redeployment as operational needs change. The system is available as a standalone sensor or integrated into a larger counter-UAS (C-UAS) system, with the option to include Terma’s proprietary display solution.
Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Terma, described the new system as a strategic advancement: “The launch of SCANTER Sphera is a clear reflection of Terma’s strategic commitment to advancing drone and counter-drone capabilities. We are investing in innovation that addresses the rapidly changing threat landscape and strengthens our position as a trusted partner in defence and security. SCANTER Sphera is only the beginning of what we have planned in this critical domain building on the strong Terma legacy.”
Terma positions SCANTER Sphera as a strategic response to the increasing need for reliable, adaptable, and fast-responding counter-drone technology. The system is designed to address the evolving challenges faced by defence and critical infrastructure operators worldwide.
