Thales has signed an order with the Qatar Emiri Air Force for GM200 MM/A and GM400α radars to reinforce the country’s airspace sovereignty. The agreement was signed at the DIMDEX exhibition in Doha and covers medium- and long-range air surveillance capabilities.

The decision reflects the changing nature of airspace threats, including recent drone incursions, which require constant, accurate detection and effective data processing. Countries such as Qatar are therefore investing in high-performance radar systems that can integrate new information into existing national systems.

The GM200 MM/A is a multi-mission aerial surveillance radar designed to detect small targets at distances of up to 350 kilometres, while the GM400α provides enhanced situational awareness across a wide range of threat profiles. Both systems are designed for easy deployment and reliable operation in varied and complex environments.

The radars benefit from Thales’s Secure Digital Integration Platform, which enables the creation and instant distribution of a high-quality, unified air picture. This architecture also allows the future integration of all existing non-US sensors into a single national air picture.

In addition to delivering the radars, Thales will provide a national supervision and maintenance system and a training programme for operators and technicians. A local Thales team will support maintenance and daily training activities for the Qatar Emiri Air Force until 2036.

“We are proud to contribute to Qatar’s airspace sovereignty with our integrated air surveillance system based on our advanced medium and long-range tactical radars. The GM200 MM/A and the GM400α will support the Qatar Emiri Air Force in maintaining sovereignty and protecting their airspace against drones and other threats. This contract further demonstrates the enduring partnership between Thales and Qatar,” said Raphael Desi, Vice-President Integrated Airspace-protection Systems activities at Thales.

Thales has been a trusted partner of the State of Qatar for more than 40 years and supports the country’s sovereignty and local economy through digital technologies. These activities are aligned with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and build on the global deployment of more than 200 Ground Master family radars worldwide.
