This acquisition is part of the broader Night Vision Systems Modernization (NVSM) project, aimed at enhancing the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) operational capabilities in low-visibility conditions.
The Sophie Ultima is designed as a lightweight, handheld device that provides exceptional thermal imaging capabilities in the field.
With its high-performance infrared channel, the imager boasts a NATO tank recognition range of up to 6 kilometres, a crucial feature for military operations requiring long-range detection and engagement.
Additionally, its continuous optical zoom and wide 20° field of view enable soldiers to effectively track targets during the detection, recognition, and identification stages.
Thales has committed to manufacturing and maintaining the Sophie Ultima at its Canadian Electro-Optics Centre of Excellence, which will significantly contribute to strengthening Canada’s defence industrial base.
This local production approach is expected to generate new jobs, stimulate economic growth, and expand Thales’s supply chain within the country.
To further support the initiative, the Thales Optronics facility in Montreal will handle comprehensive in-service support, offering a dedicated repair centre to the Canadian Armed Forces.
This local support will ensure rapid turnaround times for equipment maintenance, minimising downtime and enhancing operational readiness for the CAF.
Benoit Plantier, Vice President of Optronics, Missile Electronics, and Unmanned Air Systems at Thales, commented on the project: “Thales is committed to delivering advanced, reliable, and locally supported solutions like the Sophie Ultima.”
This contract represents a significant step forward in modernising the Canadian military’s equipment, ensuring that its forces are well-prepared for complex and demanding environments.
By equipping its troops with cutting-edge technology like the Sophie Ultima, the Canadian Armed Forces aim to maintain a technological edge in both domestic and international operations.
