Thales to provide Ground Fire radar as Denmark chooses SAMP/T NG air and missile defence system

By Defence Industry Europe

The Danish Ministry of Defence has selected the SAMP/T NG mobile ground-to-air system to strengthen its national air defence and ensure interoperability with European and NATO forces. Thales, working with MBDA, will provide the system’s Ground Fire surveillance radar alongside command and control components.

The SAMP/T NG is designed to intercept and destroy medium-range ballistic missiles, aircraft, and drones. Each Danish section will be equipped with Thales’s Ground Fire radar and the Engagement Module New Generation, with both produced in cooperation with MBDA.

Based on digital AESA technology, the Ground Fire radar can track and classify multiple targets with a range of up to 400 km. It offers 360° panoramic coverage, 90° elevation, and a one-second refresh rate, while remaining compact and highly mobile.

The system is also designed for interoperability with European platforms, contributing to strengthened continental air defence. Thales emphasised that the radar maximises the performance of the new-generation Aster 30 missile family, reinforcing Europe’s strategic autonomy.

Hervé Dammann, Executive Vice-President, Land and Air Systems, Thales, said: “Thales is honoured by the choice made by the Danish authorities. With Eurosam and MBDA, we sincerely thank our client for their trust. The Danish armed forces will benefit from a state-of-the-art system to guarantee the protection of their airspace and contribute to the defence of European countries and NATO.”

The SAMP/T NG programme is overseen by the Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement (OCCAR). Eurosam, a joint venture between Thales and MBDA, serves as the lead contractor for the entire system.
