Both milestones mark further progress in the Submarine Development Program, known as PROSUB, and strengthen the Navy’s operational capacity. The first submarine, Riachuelo (S40), entered service in September 2022 and the second, Humaitá (S41), followed in January 2024.
Naval Group is supporting the construction of four Scorpène class submarines at the Itaguaí Construções Navais shipyard through a Technology Transfer agreement. Pierre Éric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group, said, “We are honored to contribute to strengthening Brazil’s maritime sovereignty. More than delivering submarines, our mission is to build, together with Brazil, a long-term technological and industrial legacy. Our partnership with the Brazilian Navy is a prime example of strategic cooperation between nations that share common values and objectives in the global arena”.
The company has provided technology, key equipment and technical assistance to ICN as part of the programme. ICN teams also trained in France in areas such as welding, metal forming, plumbing and electrical work, allowing the shipyard to master processes from metal plate forming to system commissioning.
Naval Group has meanwhile qualified local suppliers and integrated them into its supply chain for PROSUB and future opportunities. This approach is intended to open new markets for Brazilian partners through the expertise acquired during the programme.
The Scorpène submarines are conventional attack submarines designed by Naval Group to meet Brazilian Navy requirements. They are built for anti surface warfare, anti submarine warfare and special operations, and are noted for acoustic performance, endurance and combat capability in deep and shallow waters.
