On 5 January 2026, more than 140 new employees started work at the thyssenkrupp Marine Systems site in Wismar, raising the total workforce there to over 400. The site is being developed into a hybrid shipyard for future submarine and surface vessel projects and is set to become one of TKMS’s largest locations in Germany alongside Kiel.

“We are delighted to welcome so many new employees to Wismar. The increase in personnel is not only important for TKMS and the development of the site, but also for the city of Wismar and the eastern German coastal region,” said Dr Dirk Steinbrink, Chief Technology Officer of TKMS. “With the upgrading of our shipyard, we will gradually create up to 1,500 jobs in Wismar by the end of 2029, depending on the order situation.”

He added: “In addition, our record order book will keep production running at full capacity for the next few years and create good prospects for our employees.” According to TKMS, the workforce growth is part of a broader ramp-up linked to long-term capacity planning at the site.

Since the beginning of last year, parts of the shipyard have been upgraded for TKMS’s product portfolio, with planned investments of more than €200 million in the coming years. These include modernising hall infrastructure and installing a new submarine production line to support underwater projects, parts of a possible F127 frigate programme, and construction of the new Polarstern.
