The contract centres on advanced Li-ion battery technology for high-end naval applications. Saft said it reflects growing demand for battery systems combining performance, reliability and operational safety.
The company described the award as a breakthrough for submarine energy systems. Its Li-ion batteries are based on proprietary cells developed and manufactured in-house.
Compared with lead-acid technologies, Saft said the systems offer higher energy density and longer underwater endurance. The company also said they improve operational performance, mission flexibility and safety under demanding defence requirements.
The contract follows several years of close cooperation between Saft and Naval Group. Both companies present the partnership as an example of European industrial sovereignty in a strategic naval technology area.
The programme brings together two European industrial players to develop and deliver critical technologies within Europe. Saft said the work supports sovereign defence capabilities and could open the way for future international programmes.
Saft said its role is built on control of the full battery value chain, beginning with electrochemistry. The company said it has delivered reliable systems for critical applications for more than 100 years.

Our Li-ion systems set a new standard in energy density, safety and reliability, positioning Saft at the heart of next-generation naval defense programs,” said Cedric Duclos, Chief Executive Officer of Saft.
“This is also a clear step forward for European technological sovereignty.” His comments link the contract to both submarine performance and Europe’s ability to retain control over key defence technologies.

The agreement gives Saft a larger role in Naval Group submarine programmes. It also places advanced battery systems at the centre of efforts to improve underwater endurance, safety and mission flexibility for future submarine operations.
