President Donald Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is slowing progress towards a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine, according to Reuters. Speaking in a Reuters interview, Trump said of Russian President Vladimir Putin, “I think he’s ready to make a deal,” adding, “I think Ukraine is less ready to make a deal.”

When asked why US-led negotiations had failed to bring an end to the conflict, Trump directly blamed the Ukrainian leader. He told Reuters that the reason was simply “Zelensky.”

During Trump’s second term, his administration has repeatedly pushed for an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine, but with limited success. Trump has met Zelensky several times and also met Putin in Alaska a few months ago.

Late last month, Trump and Zelensky met at Mar-a-Lago, where both leaders later said there had been progress on a 20-point peace proposal supported by Zelensky. At a joint press conference, Trump said, “Our meeting was excellent, we covered — somebody would say 95 percent, I don’t know what percent — but we have made a lot of progress on ending that war.”

However, Trump said significant issues remained unresolved, particularly regarding territory. He stated, “I think the land — you’re talking about — some of that land has been taken. Some of that land is maybe up for grabs, but it may be taken over the next period of a number of months — and you’re better off making a deal now,” Trump said.
