U.S. Air Force activates Experimental Operations Unit to advance Collaborative Combat Aircraft integration

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Air Force officially activated the Experimental Operations Unit (EOU) during a ceremony on 5 June at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. Previously operating as a detachment since 2023, the unit is now a fully operational squadron-level organisation within the 53rd Wing.

The activation marks a key milestone in the Department of the Air Force’s goal to deliver operational capability for Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) Increment 1 before the end of the decade. These uncrewed systems will operate alongside 5th and 6th generation crewed fighters to enhance the flexibility and effectiveness of the Joint Force.

“This is a pivotal moment for our force,” said Col. Daniel Lehoski, 53rd Wing Commander. “The EOU embodies our commitment to rapid innovation and ensuring our warfighters have the most advanced tools to dominate the future battlespace.”

The EOU is tasked with accelerating development and integration of CCA technologies, reducing risk, and delivering combat-ready capability more quickly. It will focus on realistic testing of human-machine teaming, mission autonomy, and operational concepts across a range of scenarios.

“We are here to accelerate the delivery of combat-ready capabilities to the warfighter,” said Lt. Col. Matthew Jensen, EOU Commander. “Our experimental operations will ensure that CCA are immediately viable as a credible combat capability that increases Joint Force survivability and lethality.”

The unit will work closely with the Virtual Warfare Center and the Joint Integrated Test and Training Center at Nellis to conduct simulations and evaluate non-materiel aspects of CCA use. Live-fly experiments are also planned to confirm simulation outcomes and refine operational tactics and procedures.

“Our vision is to create a collaborative combat ecosystem that is more agile, adaptable and lethal,” Jensen added. “This will enable our forces to dominate the future battlespace and achieve decisive advantages in complex, contested environments.”

The EOU’s activation supports the strategic vision of Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David W. Allvin, who has prioritised CCA as essential to achieving affordable mass and preserving the U.S. military’s technological edge.
