F-35A Lightning II fighter jets from the 4th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron at Hill Air Force Base arrived at Kadena Air Base on 7 October 2025. Their deployment reinforces the United States Air Force fighter presence in the Indo Pacific.

The 4th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron joins F-35As from the 356th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron based at Eielson Air Force Base. Their arrival strengthens regional airpower and reflects the United States commitment to peace, stability and a free and open Indo Pacific.

Both squadrons will work with the 18th Wing’s operations and maintenance groups. The aim is to boost readiness and improve interoperability with allies and partners across the region.

“The Fightin’ Fuujins are ready to train with the 18th Wing and demonstrate the versatility our F-35s bring to Kadena’s collective capabilities,” said Lt. Col. Adam Thompson, 4th EFS commander. “Our relevance here is to enhance a fully integrated, reliable force prepared to respond whenever and wherever needed.”

Kadena Air Base, known as the Keystone of the Pacific, continues to serve as a central hub for Agile Combat Employment. Its role helps United States forces project power quickly and operate smoothly throughout the Indo Pacific.

“This deployment expands our operational reach and provides our Airmen valuable opportunities to train with key allies and partners,” said Lt. Col. Joseph Curran, 356th EFS commander. “We’re proud to bring the Demons to Kadena.”

The F-35A remains the Air Force’s most advanced fifth generation fighter with stealth, sensor fusion and strong situational awareness. Its agility and multirole capability give commanders flexible and survivable options across all operations.

Ongoing fighter rotations at Kadena keep the 18th Wing ready to deliver credible and lethal airpower. This posture supports deterrence and helps maintain stability across the region.

The 18th Wing will continue to follow all bilateral agreements with the Government of Japan on noise abatement. Visiting aircrews receive local noise guidance and mission planners will keep working to limit local impact.
