The operation marked the largest B-2 operational strike in U.S. Air Force history and involved Airmen from the 509th and 131st Bomb Wings. In a matter of weeks, strategic planning efforts were transformed into a globally coordinated mission.
“The success of this mission demonstrates the precision and potency of a combat-ready Air Force and strategic innovation,” Meink stated during the visit. “The warfighting capability of the Total Force Airmen here and the B-2 Spirit was tested with the world watching, and Team Whiteman performed flawlessly.”
A key feature of the mission included the use of decoy bombers flying west over the Pacific Ocean, a tactic known only to a small group of planners and top military leadership. The seven operational aircraft deployed 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators, representing the first combat use of the “bunker buster” munitions.
During their visit, Meink and Allvin personally recognised Airmen who demonstrated excellence throughout all phases of the operation. Their efforts encompassed planning, preparation, and execution under strict timelines and high pressure.
“The U.S. Air Force’s ability to project airpower globally with minimal notice is unmatched,” Allvin said. “Our advantage stems from Airmen who are mission-focused and able to adapt to a rapidly evolving strategic landscape. The Airmen here have set the standard for operational precision and execution.”
Support for the mission extended beyond aircrews and planners to include vital contributions from the 509th Maintenance Group. These personnel were responsible for assembling and loading the GBU-57 bombs, refuelling aircraft, and completing essential preflight inspections under tight deadlines.
“I could not be prouder of the men and women of Team Whiteman,” said Col. Joshua Wiitala, commander of the 509th Bomb Wing. “Operation Midnight Hammer showed the world that we are ready to deliver precision global strike when called upon. We are humbled by the recognition the team is receiving from our nation’s leaders for their perseverance and dedication to our one-of-a-kind mission.”
Whiteman AFB remains the sole installation operating the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, playing a critical role in the U.S. Strategic Command’s deterrence efforts. Operation Midnight Hammer has underscored the platform’s capability as both a shield and a strategic strike asset ready for global deployment.
