U.S. Army acquires THeMIS vehicle from Milrem Robotics for Arctic research

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Army’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) has acquired a THeMIS Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) from Estonian defence technology company Milrem Robotics. This acquisition marks a significant step in advancing research into autonomous systems for extreme cold environments.

The THeMIS UGV is a modular, multi-purpose robotic platform designed for a range of military applications, including logistics, reconnaissance, and operational support. In its Cargo configuration, it assists troops by transporting supplies, equipment, and additional weaponry, thereby reducing manpower requirements and cognitive strain on soldiers.

A key enhancement to the system is the integration of the MIFIK Intelligent Functions Kit, which enables autonomous navigation in challenging terrain. This advanced capability makes the THeMIS particularly valuable for operations in Arctic and other extreme climate conditions.

Milrem Robotics has established itself as a leader in the field, with the THeMIS UGV currently deployed in 19 countries. According to Patrick Shepherd, Chief Sales Officer at Milrem Robotics, the vehicle is the most mature UGV on the market, reducing integration and procurement risks for military users.

The acquisition aligns with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ mission to drive technological innovation in support of national security and operational readiness. The THeMIS UGV will be deployed in experimental and operational scenarios to assess its performance in cold-weather environments.
