U.S. Army approves rapid fielding of CH-47F Chinook Block II helicopters to modernise heavy-lift fleet

The U.S. Army has approved rapid fielding of the CH-47F Chinook Block II helicopter, authorising procurement for fiscal years 2025 and 2026. Alongside previously approved Congressionally directed purchases, this will equip two Combat Aviation Brigades with the modernised aircraft to support future large-scale combat operations.

The CH-47F Block II is an upgrade of the existing Block I model, delivered through a recapitalisation process. It offers significantly increased payload, range, and sustainability, allowing commanders to operate more effectively in contested logistics environments.

“With the Block II Chinook’s increased gross weight and increased torque available, we can carry more,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jordan Brooks, Golf Company, 6-101 GSAB’s maintenance test pilot. “Imagining just a single serial of Block II Chinooks versus Block I Chinooks, (Block II Chinooks) can carry more Soldiers and equipment, and carry them further.”

The upgraded aircraft’s increased maximum gross weight of 54,000 pounds enables commanders to transport more soldiers, equipment, and fuel over longer distances. This improved efficiency reduces the number of sorties required and lowers exposure risks for crews while accelerating operational tempo.

Block II’s Common Avionics Architecture System (CAAS) adopts a Modular Open Systems Approach, which supports future upgrades including degraded visual environment sensors and semi-autonomous flight capabilities. This digital growth capacity positions the aircraft for eventual full autonomy as technologies mature.

Its shared design with the special operations MH-47G variant allows the Army and SOCOM to coordinate on modernisation, improving cost efficiency and logistics support. Component commonality also reduces production and sustainment costs while streamlining support for fielded units.

International demand for the CH-47F Block II is increasing, with one partner nation already committed to acquiring 60 aircraft. Several other partner nations have also expressed interest, reflecting the platform’s growing global reputation for reliability and capability.

“Block II is about more than incremental improvement—it’s about ensuring the Army and the Joint Force retain a heavy-lift advantage in contested environments,” said COL Jennie Conlon, the PM of Cargo Helicopters. “With added payload, range, and digital growth capacity, the Chinook will continue to deliver for Soldiers and evolve to remain ahead of future battlefield environments.”

The CH-47F Block II represents both the legacy of the Chinook and a major step forward in preparing for the challenges of modern warfare. Its fielding reflects the Army’s focus on continuity, transformation, and maintaining an operational edge against peer adversaries.
