The U.S. Army's 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force (MDTF) has successfully deployed a Mid-Range Capability (MRC) system to Australia and conducted a live fire of a Standard Missile 6 (SM-6) on 15 July 2025. The launch, carried out during Exercise Talisman Sabre 25, resulted in the successful sinking of a maritime target, supporting bilateral cooperation between U.S. and Australian forces.

This marks a significant milestone in the U.S. military’s efforts to develop land-based maritime and strategic strike capabilities. It also demonstrates the 3rd MDTF’s ability to forward deploy Long-Range Precision Fires (LRPF) and effectively execute command and control from a combined multi-domain node alongside the Australian Army.

According to U.S. Army officials, this event was the first-ever land-based MRC launch conducted west of the International Date Line. The demonstration was conducted in coordination with joint force elements, reinforcing the interoperability of the two militaries in complex, multi-domain operations.

“The deployment of the MRC and successful execution of an SM-6 live fire against a maritime target is another significant step forward in our ability to deploy, integrate, and command and control advanced land-based maritime strike capabilities,” said Colonel Wade Germann, Commander of the 3rd MDTF. “This exercise validated our targeting and C2 interoperability with our partner unit the Australian 10th Brigade through the Land Effects Coordination Cell.”

Col. Germann further noted the strategic impact of the operation, stating, “We have set the stage to develop and deploy combat-credible, multi-domain capabilities forward in support of the Combined and Joint Force.” The live fire event provided essential insights that will help shape future development of land-based maritime and strategic strike operations.
