U.S. Army demonstrates Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) System’s deep-strike capability in Australia

By Defence Industry Europe

The United States Army has, for the first time, deployed a Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) system outside the continental U.S., marking a historic milestone. The 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force (3MDTF) positioned the advanced system in Australia's Northern Territory as part of Talisman Sabre 25.

This deployment represents a major step for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, validating the Army’s ability to manage and operate the LRHW system in a forward location. “The deployment of the LRHW system to Australia marks a significant achievement for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, as it validates the Army’s ability to deploy, position, and exercise command and control (C2) of the system in a forward environment,” said Admiral Samuel J. Paparo, Commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.

Talisman Sabre 25 is the largest joint military exercise between the U.S. and Australia, aimed at improving interoperability and strengthening strategic relationships. The 3MDTF’s involvement underlines its role in supporting Australia’s defence and promoting regional stability.

Colonel Wade Germann, Commander of the 3MDTF, noted the significance of the move, stating, “The deployment of the LRHW system to Australia is a major milestone for the Army and demonstrates our ability to rapidly deploy and operate advanced capabilities in support of our allies and partners.” He added, “This exercise showcases our commitment to the defense of Australia and to the security of the Indo-Pacific region and highlights the strength of our partnership with the Australian Defence Force.”

The LRHW system enables the 3MDTF to execute precision strikes over long distances at hypersonic speeds, offering a swift response to emerging threats. Its presence in Australia illustrates the unit’s agility and commitment to remaining at the forefront of military innovation.

This successful deployment reinforces the 3MDTF’s position as a key actor in maintaining regional security and stability. It also reflects the enduring strategic partnership between the United States and Australia and their shared dedication to enhancing deterrence in the Indo-Pacific.
