CENTCOM said its forces located and destroyed an ISIS communications site, a critical logistics node, and several weapons storage facilities. The strikes involved the delivery of 50 precision munitions from fixed-wing, rotary-wing, and unmanned aircraft, it said.
“Striking these targets demonstrates our continued focus and resolve for preventing an ISIS resurgence in Syria,” said Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander. “Operating in coordination with coalition and partner forces to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS makes America, the region and the world safer.”
The strikes were carried out under Operation Hawkeye Strike, launched in response to a December 13 ISIS attack on U.S. and Syrian forces in Palmyra. That ambush killed two U.S. service members and an American interpreter, CENTCOM said.
After nearly two months of targeted operations, more than 50 ISIS terrorists have been killed or captured, according to the command. CENTCOM said its forces killed ISIS leader Bilal Hasan al-Jasim in a deliberate strike in northwest Syria on January 16, adding that he was directly connected to the gunman responsible for the December 13 attack.
