Although the production contract was signed on 27 October 2025, public disclosure was delayed due to a temporary shutdown of the U.S. federal administration. The contract is fully funded by Germany, and all work is scheduled for completion by the end of October 2035.
This step follows an intergovernmental agreement signed between the United States and Germany in July 2023 for the purchase of 60 CH-47F Chinook Block II helicopters. The deliveries, set to take place from 2027 to 2033, will allow Germany to replace its ageing fleet of CH-53G Stallion helicopters used by the Bundeswehr.
The total value of Germany’s Chinook procurement is EUR 6.98 billion. The package includes helicopters, spare parts, pilot and maintenance training, logistical support services, ground support equipment, and simulation and training devices. The helicopters will be delivered with a standard internal fuel configuration and equipped with aerial refuelling probes compatible with flexible hose systems. These will be supported by Germany’s incoming Lockheed Martin KC-130J Super Hercules aircraft.
Germany’s order currently represents the largest international commitment to the CH-47F Chinook Block II programme. Boeing continues to deliver this model in limited numbers to the U.S. Army and is fulfilling a separate order for MH-47G Block II helicopters for U.S. Special Operations Forces.
In addition to the German order, the United Kingdom has procured 14 CH-47F Block II helicopters, and Japan has recently placed a smaller order, reflecting sustained global interest in this next-generation heavy transport platform.
