CENTCOM confirmed that two aircraft were involved in the event, with one aircraft crashing while the other landed safely. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether there were casualties or how many personnel may have been injured.
The crash occurred during Operation Epic Fury as rescue and recovery efforts continued in the area. The U.S. military said additional details are still being collected as the situation develops.
“We ask for continued patience to gather additional details and provide clarity for the families of service members,” CENTCOM said Thursday.
KC-135 refueling aircraft, produced by Boeing and first introduced into service in 1956, are widely deployed across the Central Command area of responsibility. The aircraft play a critical role in sustaining aerial operations by providing midair refueling for U.S. and allied military aircraft.
The KC-135 has an operational range of up to 1,500 miles while carrying approximately 150,000 pounds of transferable fuel. The aircraft supports operations for the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and allied partner forces operating in the region.
The incident occurred amid intensifying military operations connected to the war with Iran. U.S. and Israeli forces continue conducting strikes on targets inside Iran, while Tehran has responded with attacks against Israeli and U.S. assets in Gulf countries.
According to CENTOM, U.S. forces have struck approximately 6,000 targets inside Iran since the conflict began. The command also reported that more than 90 Iranian vessels have been destroyed or sunk, including over 30 boats used for laying naval mines.
The Pentagon previously stated that at least seven U.S. service members have been killed since the conflict began and around 140 others have been wounded. Military officials have not yet indicated whether the aircraft incident is connected to any combat activity.
