U.S. Marine Corps demonstrates F-35B Lightning II capabilities at Miramar Airshow in San Diego

A U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II from Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 502 landed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar during America’s Air Show 2025 in San Diego on 26 September. The aircraft, part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and I Marine Expeditionary Force, demonstrated its short take-off and vertical landing capability.

The aircraft, part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and I Marine Expeditionary Force, demonstrated its short take-off and vertical landing capability.

 

The F-35B is designed to operate from austere bases as well as aviation-capable ships, highlighting its versatility for Marine aviation operations. Aviators from VMFAT-502 showcased the aircraft’s advanced features as part of the programme.

 

 

Organisers described the airshow as a celebration of Marine and joint aviation capabilities. America’s Air Show 2025 also featured civilian performers and the world-famous Blue Angels, drawing attention to the event’s scale.

The display marked the 250th anniversary of the Marine Corps, with emphasis placed on innovation and progress. Attendees were given the opportunity to “see first-hand the innovative spirit of the Marine Corps through emerging technologies and forward-thinking,” according to the event description.
