Throughout the deployment, VMFA-542 conducted Close Air Support, Armed Overwatch, and Defensive Counter-Air missions supporting U.S. Marine, Navy, and Army units, as well as coalition and partner nation forces. The squadron demonstrated the versatility of the F-35B in live operations while advancing tactics, techniques, and procedures for future missions.
VMFA-542 flew over 1,099 combat sorties and logged more than 4,736 mishap-free flight hours, contributing directly to CENTCOM’s integrated air campaign. The squadron maintained a high Aircraft Mission Capable readiness rate, led the Marine Corps in F-35 flight hours, and reinforced regional deterrence and maritime security.
“VMFA-542’s historic deployment has set new benchmarks for Marine Corps aviation, demonstrating that a forward deployed F-35B squadron can deliver unmatched combat power and readiness while seamlessly integrating with Joint Forces during a major regional crisis,” said LtCol Carlo F. Bonci, Executive Officer, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 542.
As part of CENTCOM’s Air Component Ninth Air Force (Air Forces Central), VMFA-542 played a key role in coalition air and defence operations. The deployment of the F-35B brought enhanced tactical flexibility, expanded intelligence capabilities, and precision strike options to the mission.
The F-35B, a fifth-generation stealth fighter with short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities, provides the Marine Corps with agility across both air-to-air and air-to-ground operations. Its presence in the region strengthened joint force readiness and supported enduring partnerships with regional allies.
The deployment reaffirmed the Marine Corps’ ability to operate effectively in complex environments and deliver forward-deployed combat power. VMFA-542’s performance has been recognised by joint and coalition leaders and has established a new standard for aviation excellence across the fleet.
