The future USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr. (DDG 124), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, arrived at Naval Station Norfolk on March 20. The warship is scheduled to be commissioned into active service on April 11, 2026.

The ship’s arrival marks a key milestone as it prepares to join the U.S. Navy fleet. The vessel will operate from Norfolk following its commissioning ceremony.

Retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Harvey Curtiss “Barney” Barnum Jr., the ship’s namesake and a Medal of Honor recipient, attended the arrival. He greeted the crew on the pier as they reached their new homeport.

“To be on the pier and welcome this incredible crew to their new homeport is monumental,” said Col. Barnum. “This warship represents the enduring bond between the Marine Corps and the Navy, and I have the utmost confidence in the crew to carry on the legacy of service and courage that defines our naval forces. I look forward to seeing them ‘bring her to life’ and join the fleet.”

The destroyer is the first U.S. Navy ship to be named after Barnum, recognising his actions during the Vietnam War. In December 1965, then-First Lieutenant Barnum assumed command of his company under fire, directed air support and led a counterattack against entrenched enemy positions.

He also coordinated the evacuation of casualties and contributed to securing the battalion’s objective. Barnum is among the few living individuals to witness the commissioning of a ship bearing his name.

The ship’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Benjamin R. Cantu, said the crew is prepared for operational duties. “It is an honor to bring this warship to Norfolk and to be welcomed by Colonel Barnum himself. His heroism is the standard we strive to meet every day,” he said.

“This crew has trained relentlessly to prepare for this moment. We are ready to join the fleet and carry the name of a true American hero as we defend our nation’s interests around the globe,” Cantu added.

The ship’s sponsor, Martha Hill, wife of Col. Barnum, will take part in the commissioning ceremony. In keeping with naval tradition, she will give the order to “man our ship and bring her to life!” as the vessel formally enters service.

USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr. is a Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class destroyer designed for a range of missions, including anti-air, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. Once commissioned, it will be capable of operating independently or as part of larger naval formations.

The ship will support U.S. national security objectives and contribute to global maritime stability. Its arrival in Norfolk places it within the Navy’s Atlantic surface fleet as it prepares for operational deployment.
