U.S. Navy awards Data Link Solutions USD 1 billion contract for TMIDS JTRS modernisation

By Defence Industry Europe

Data Link Solutions (DLS), a joint venture between BAE Systems and Collins Aerospace, has been awarded an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract worth up to USD 1 billion by the U.S. Navy. The contract encompasses production, retrofits, development, and sustainment of the Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS).

MIDS JTRS is a state-of-the-art tactical radio system that provides secure, jam-resistant communications for sea, ground, and air operations. By enabling Link 16 connectivity, the system supports real-time voice, video, and data exchange, enhancing situational awareness and mission effectiveness for U.S. and allied forces.

“MIDS JTRS brings different generations of platforms onto a common communications network. It provides more stable and secure gateways in the most contested scenarios,” said Amber Dolan, director of Data Link Solutions. She added that the award allows DLS to modernise thousands of terminals and deliver new capabilities for U.S. Navy and coalition missions.

The four-channel software-defined radio supports the Link 16 waveform alongside additional communication protocols, making it versatile and adaptable. Link 16 is a NATO-standardised system that facilitates real-time tactical data sharing, offering low-latency, high-capacity connectivity in contested environments. The system is deployed on platforms such as the F-15, F-16, F/A-18, and F-22 aircraft, as well as naval ships and command centres.

DLS has over 25 years of experience delivering affordable, high-performance Link 16 terminals, supplying more than 9,000 systems to over 50 nations. This contract will see development and production activities conducted in Wayne, New Jersey, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, supporting U.S. and NATO operations through the Foreign Military Sales programme.

The first task order, valued at $116 million, has already been awarded to provide terminals and spares, with further production awards anticipated.
