U.S. Navy destroyers intercept Houthi missile and drone Attacks in Gulf of Aden

The U.S. Navy destroyers USS Stockdale (DDG 106) and USS O’Kane (DDG 77) successfully intercepted and defeated a series of weapons launched by Houthi forces during a transit through the Gulf of Aden. The operation, which took place between November 30 and December 1, ensured the safety of three U.S.-owned merchant vessels under escort, with no injuries or damage reported, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a press release.

The destroyers neutralised multiple threats, including three anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs), three one-way attack uncrewed aerial systems (OWA UAS), and one anti-ship cruise missile (ASCM). These defensive measures safeguarded both civilian vessels and naval personnel in a high-risk area.

“These actions reflect the ongoing commitment of CENTCOM forces to protect U.S. personnel, regional partners, and international shipping, against attacks by Iran-backed Houthis,” according to a statement from the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The swift response underscores the U.S. Navy’s capability to counter complex threats in contested waters.

The Gulf of Aden remains a strategic transit route for global commerce, and the presence of U.S. Naval forces plays a crucial role in deterring hostile activity. CENTCOM continues to work closely with regional partners to maintain stability and ensure the safety of international shipping lanes.
