U.S. Navy destroyers intercept simulated ballistic missile during NATO exercise Formidable Shield 2025

The U.S. Navy's Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116) and USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), conducted successful live-fire missile engagements during Exercise At Sea Demonstration/Formidable Shield (ASD/FS) 2025. These actions were carried out using the Aegis Weapons System, designed specifically for ballistic missile defence.

On 15 May 2025, USS Thomas Hudner successfully intercepted a short-range ballistic missile (IAMD-T) target using an SM-6 missile. Five days later, on 20 May 2025, both Thomas Hudner and Bulkeley jointly engaged a medium-range ballistic missile target (ARAV-B) and a simulated target (EDTT) with an SM-3 missile.

The successful intercepts demonstrated the effectiveness and combat readiness of U.S. Navy systems, reinforcing the ability to operate in coordination with Allied forces. “It sends a strong message to any potential adversary by demonstrating combat credibility,” a U.S. Navy spokesperson stated.

ASD/FS 25 is the largest at-sea live-fire exercise in the European theatre and is hosted by U.S. 6th Fleet, with execution by Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO. The exercise involves a wide array of live-fire events, including engagements against unmanned systems and various types of aerial and ballistic threats.

Taking place across multiple battlespaces, the exercise integrates Allied ships, multi-national ground-based air defences, and aviation forces to deliver coordinated and lethal effects. Commencing on 3 May 2025, the exercise includes approximately 6,900 personnel from NATO member nations.
