U.S. Navy launches SONGBOW laser weapon programme to counter aerial threats

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Navy has initiated a new high-classified weapons programme known as SONGBOW, aimed at deploying a high-energy laser system capable of countering modern airborne threats. The $29.9 million effort is designed to deliver a 400-kilowatt precision weapon to target drone swarms, hypersonic missiles, and similar advanced systems.

A contract has been awarded to Coherent Aerospace & Defense, which will be responsible for developing the next-generation directed-energy weapon. The system will combine multiple 50-kilowatt laser modules into a single, high-powered and focused beam.

Coherent, the global leader in photonics, expressed confidence in delivering on the Navy’s requirements. “We harness photons to drive innovation,” the company stated, adding that “industry leaders in the datacenter, communications, and industrial markets rely on Coherent’s world-leading technology to fuel their own innovation and growth.”

Founded in 1971, Coherent operates in more than 20 countries and brings a comprehensive technology portfolio to the defence sector. The company cited its “broadest, deepest technology stack; unmatched supply chain resilience; and global scale” as key assets in supporting its customers through the most demanding technological challenges.
